Ever since the early nineties, Dutch artists Henk Bezemer (1957) and Frank van Oosten (1958) have worked together under the name Mishmash from their studio in the centre of Rotterdam.
Mishmash also collaborates with other artists and designers, brings together art and interior where possible and loves to mix styles.
With a law degree and art education in their pocket, Henk and Frank started their career (against al odds) as actor and then switched to the designing of sets and costumes, which eventually led to art and interior design under the common name ‘Mishmash’.
They now mainly make assemblages and paintings, but also design complete interiors for hotels and public spaces.
Architecture by, for example, John Lautner, Philip Johnson or Cesar Manrique.
Artists such as Cai Guo-Qiang, Fabienne Verdier, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.
Stubborn designers such as Dorothy Draper, Piero Fornasetti, Dimore Studio and Jonathan Adler.
Film en theaterdecors, absolute favorieten “ Les Parapluis de Cherbourg” met Catherine Deneuve, “The Party” met Peter Sellers en “A Single Man” van regisseur en modeontwerper Tom Ford.
MISHMASH has a studio and gallery in the center of Rotterdam, near Markthal and Meent. There is much going on here, but everyone is always allowed to come in to take a look and browse between paintings and objects, by Mishmash and other artists. Everything is for sale!
Tuesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday to 5 p.m.
If you come from afar, then maybe just give us a call first, sometimes we are busy working on location.
I prefer living in color.
Color is all. When color is right, form is right. Color is everything, color is vibration like music; everything is vibration.
Salvation is in the imagination: if I were a government minister, I would set up a hundred schools of imagination in Italy.
You create your own decoration. You choose your color, you choose your mood. ... If you are depressed, you put some bright yellow and suddenly you are happy.
I always put in one controversial item, it makes people talk.
I like to be the right thing in the wrong place and the wrong thing in the right place. Being the right thing in the wrong place and the wrong thing in the right place is worth it because something interesting always happens.
Any place on earth without a strong tradition, without personality and without enough poetic atmosphere, it is doomed to die.
Art should be something that liberates your soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further.
The purpose of Architecture is to improve human life. Create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities in life. The infinite variety of these spaces can be as varied as life itself and they must be as sensible as nature in deriving from a main idea and flowering into a beautiful entity.
More is more!
So much of art today has become tied up with ideas, with philosophy, with the abstract, and a lot of people feel excluded from it because of the impoverishment of the image. Nobody is excluded from my work.
The difference between false memories and true ones is the same as for jewels: it is always the false ones that look the most real, the most brilliant.
